ANOTHER SIGNAL OF HOPE IS FOUND IN TECHNOLOGY
Since I am a bit older, I have been dragged kicking and screaming into technology. When I was working on a project for my master’s degree in public administration my oldest daughter asked me if I had saved the project to “the cloud”. Where I responded, “oh no. I just saved to my computer.” This is what I envisioned when I thought of saving to the cloud:
Well, I had no idea that “THE CLOUD” was this other amazing thing. This year I was a student in a technical writing course and each of us was asked to complete a project. The teacher suggested we investigate an area that we knew nothing or little about. This was the perfect time for me to become “better-versed” about the “THE CLOUD”. Where the previous picture became:
THE HISTORY OF “THE CLOUD”
In the 50’s and 60’s computers were huge and expensive. The bulk of the work was done on physical servers that the user doesn’t directly interact with.
At the very end of the ‘60s DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) was making headway on ARPANET which was the beginning of technology of the web services available on the internet today.
I had my first experience with “mainframes” in college At Mississippi State University in 1979. In my Introduction to Computer Science course, we were required to write code on punch cards and march it down to the huge mainframe computer to determine if our calculations were correct.
I was confounded by this and lay down my knowledge of computers until 1997. At this time, I worked in an office where it was necessary for me to learn WordPerfect and database entry. From that time to the present, my knowledge has grown. I am dumbfounded by the amazing things my desktop and laptop can accomplish. Obviously, I have been around for a while. We have two desktop computers, one laptop and one iPad as well as, 2 iPhones which are computers in themselves. I can confidently say that my knowledge has grown over the years.
I have learned in spite of the fact that I was pulled kicking and screaming through the advancements of technology. In 1989 The World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee a researcher from England entered the world stage. The Web led to the expansion of the internet.
Over the next decades, the cloud has billowed!
PUBLIC vs PRIVATE vs HYBRID CLOUD STORAGE
There are three popular models in “Cloud Computing”: Public Cloud, Private Cloud and Hybrid Could. A Private Cloud is a computing service that is offered over the internet or on a private internal network. It only supports connectivity over the private network. Only authorized users may access private cloud organizations.
A Public Cloud involves a large quantity of servers attached to a central server. Users in a public cloud link up directly through the internet. The providers manage the hardware such as data storage.
A Hybrid Cloud is the combination of a private cloud with public cloud amenities. The objective is to combine proficiency from a variety of cloud models to create a well-managed computing atmosphere.
Whenever there are unused files taking up space on my personal computer or local drive
NOW I PLACE IT ON “THE CLOUD”!
